Oh Say... What?

I had a voice mail this morning from someone in the Athletics Dept at Weber. I don't think he and I have ever met in person, but I know his name is Ben and he's pretty darn nice on the phone. He was calling to ask if I'd be interested in singing the National Anthem at a couple of basketball games this season. Let me just tell you a little story about me and the National Anthem.

In High School I only sang it a couple of times for basketball games. I was usually a last-minute filler for someone who suddenly had to back out. No biggie. I was a cheerleader, so I was at the game anyway.

When I got to Weber, I was in an LDS student ward and one of the members of the Bishopric, Jeff, was in the Athletics Dept. He heard me sing at church, or someone told him I could sing, so he asked me if I'd sing the Anthem at some games. I agreed and sang a bunch of times in my Freshman and Sophomore years without incident. So that's how I got started singing at games.

I went a couple of years without singing at games and then Ben called me. I was nervous because it had been so long, and because Kev was in my life by that time. He had hardly ever heard me sing, so I really wanted to do well so he would think I sang pretty.

It went ok, except I forgot the words for the first time in my life. I had seriously sung the Anthem dozens of times, but I totally blanked. I took a breath and realized I had nothing floating around in my head. So I just covered the mic, turned to the guys at the commentator's table and asked them what came next. I smiled real big, turned back to the flag and started singing again. And the crowd started singing with me. It was pretty nuts. I wasn't super embarrassed, but I was pretty disappointed. I haven't had an opportunity to sing the Anthem since then. Until now.

I'll be singing at noon on Wednesday, December 12th for a girls' game at the Dee Events Center. Then on Tuesday, December 18th at 7 I'll be singing for a mens' game at the Dee. Scary. I can't even begin to practice because I can't remember the words. I have a mental block, apparently.

Looks like it's time to hit the books and read the lyrics a few times. Wish me luck.

  1. Good luck! Wish I could be there, to cheer and sing with you. :) I remember coming to see your play (in what seems like) decades ago. :) I'm totally blanking on what it was, but I do have a mental image of you playing a little kid and sitting on top of the actor's shoulders. Or something to that effect. :)

Thanks for stopping by!
