My former pen pal and my former roommate just had a baby

When I had bad days in high school, I could look forward to happy e-mails and letters from my pen pal Mike. He was a friend's boyfriend and we happened to meet on one of my visits to Utah.

When I had bad days in college, I could look forward to notes and hand-picked flowers from my roommate Nikki. And I still had e-mails and letters from Mike while he was on his LDS mission.

One day, Mike came home from his mission and called me.

He came up to Ogden and met my roommates.

See where this is going?

Mike met Nikki and fell in love with her.

Nikki met Mike and fell in love with him.

We all went to Vegas and they kissed for the first time.

We all came back to Ogden and had an "illegal" sleepover in the dorms and got busted.

Long story short- Mike and Nikki got married that year and have lived pretty happily ever after since then.

Imagine my delight! I get to have a history with both of them and I don't have to worry about awkward moments trying to get to know a friend's spouse (you know what I'm talking about).

And now they have a beautiful, perfect, round-cheeked, long-fingered teeny tiny little bundle of a baby. A little baby girl. A little baby girl I'm going to love on and adore and spoil and cultivate into believing I'm one of her mom's and dad's coolest friends ever.

It's my right, after all. When your former pen pal and roommate get married, I think you're allowed to stake a significant claim on their offspring.

Happy birthday baby girl! I'm so glad to meet you.
