I was a weird kid

I collected pencils. Preferably un-sharpened. Seriously. My mom used to travel for one of her jobs and she would happily bring home a hotel pencil for me as a souvenir. She also would purchase pencils from museums or take the complimentary ones home from conferences.

When I went home to visit the family in August, I finally found some items I had misplaced many years ago when I left for college. It was so freakin satisfying because I knew they were someone in the garage. My mom recently mailed those items to me and I promptly made Kev look at a sampling of my pencil collection.

Before I would let him touch any, I sternly warned him that if he sharpened and used any of the pencils, he'd be in bigger trouble than he could fathom.

Behold, the pencil collection:

Do you have a collection of anything? Is it as weird as mine?

  1. That's so cool! I have a thing for pens. Except I use them -- well, some of them. Some are just to look at. :o)

  2. I was the queen of having weird collections as a kid. Probably the weirdest: Small soaps. You know the kind that were popular in the 90s? In the shape of animals, things from nature, etc.? I still have them all somewhere in a big gift bag that started to rip years ago. Whenever I pull it out I start to sneeze because of all the combined smells. Who knows where it is now...

  3. If you were a weird kid then I must have been weird too. I loved collecting pencils. My 3rd grade teacher gave us a new pencil each month if we did good on our spelling tests. I usually go through and get rid of everything I dont use or need so I think I threw them all away or gave them away? Hopefully I gave them away b/c I had quite a few.

  5. Somehow, I've started a weird collection of pitchers. Honestly, I'm not sure how or why it began, but I'm slowly acquiring odd pitcher/glass sets.

I feel like an old lady. But it's better than Precious Moments, I guess?

  6. That is awesome. I think I had a couple of those same pencils. I don't know that have a real collection of anything except for Hard Rock Cafe pins from the places I have been that have that restaurant. I decided to collect the pins after I had purchased my first way too expense t-shirt from the first one I went to and decided I would never have the money to collect those. I guess I also collect t-shirts from most of the concerts I have been to, I think I might turn those into a blanket.

  7. I like to collect tote bags, you know the ones that they give you at the store. I probably have about 50. I also like pens. I have about 300 of those. I have a problem.

  8. Oh, and I have a collection of owl paraphernalia. Owl clothing, owl jewelry, owl dishtowels, owl baby hats, owl night lights.

  9. There was always something primally satisfying about unsharpened pencils, even though I far preferred pens. When you'd start your school year and open your little half-full box of round, blunt-ended pencils...ah, possibilities!
