Preparing your children for the real world

Parents (young and old) please prepare your children for the hassle that is renting or buying a home.

I have worked in the property management business for over 5 years. I have seen some of the most uninformed (i.e. stupid) young adults try to talk their way out of the problems they create.

Lemme tell ya, it never works.

My request is simple. Talk to your children about money. Tell them it's wrong to spend rent on clothes or trips to New York. Or booze. Or drugs. It's right to spend money of rent first.

Also? Please talk to your children about the importance of reading leases/contracts. They were written for a reason. They were signed with the understanding that all parties would uphold their respective sides.

Even if your child is still in diapers, start thinking about getting them ready for the real world. There's no rush... but it's good for you to be prepared to teach your children how to make it so I don't end up making them pay fines and fill out riders and feel stupid for illegally residing in an HOA and getting caught.

That is all.
