Recollections of the Playground

All I had to do was pull out the vacuum and Aspen was begging me to take her to the park.

"Noooo cleaning! Let's go to the parrrrk!"

We compromised and she hid under her blanket on the sofa while I vacuumed crumbs off the floor.

"How 'bout here?" Aspen climbed the first set of stairs and lay back on the landing so I could change her PJ pants for jeans, and pull a sweater over her head.

"Let's leave Hippo and go to the playground! How 'bout my purple shoes?"

"That's a great idea. Let's put our shoes on and head out!"

Walking through the neighborhood, I was surprised we didn't see a single soul enjoying the sunshine like us. When we got around the corner to the school playground, we spotted three dogs and their owners playing frisbee. Their barks echoed off the houses surrounding the field.

As usual, we had the playground to ourselves. Aspen climbed one of the ladders for the first time and kept going back for more.

"I can do it, I can do it," she automatically encouraged herself under her breath.

"Yes you can! You're strong! Show me strong!" At that, Aspen drew her arms up, bent her elbows and curled her hands into fists.

"I'M STRONG! Let's do some-gain Mommy."

We climbed the stairs a few times and went down the twin slides holding hands. When that lost its charm we walked to the back of the school and enjoyed the big-kid playground. The lure of rocks and sticks is always great and we spent most of our time there piling up the gravel and digging through the grey dust.

It's never easy to leave the playground, especially when I know there are few days of warmth left. But somehow I managed to convince Aspen that going home for lunch was a good idea. She had a collection of rocks, sticks and leaves to sort through in her stroller and she kept herself occupied on the walk home.

"I'll bring these weafs for Hippo. He'll like them!"

I'm sure he will.
