Play makeup tutorial

I looked online and in stores to find a play makeup kit that wasn't REAL makeup. I just wanted a compact or two for Aspen that had colored plastic makeup wells so I could turn my back while she played with it and not worry about her painting the couch. When I couldn't find anything that fit my vision (or my budget) I decided to make my own. Since I'm a makeup hoarder, I easily gathered up all the supplies from my cosmetics bin and got to work.

I used Q-tips and hand soap to clean out the compacts (eyeshadow compacts) and then slowly poured in various colors of nail polish I already had. I checked to make sure they weren't polishes with those little beads in them because I didn't want to accidentally pour them into the compacts and make a mess.

They take at least 24 hours to dry, and then a few days after that for the smell to dissipate. Since these are for Aspen's stocking, it wasn't a big deal to hide them and let them air out for extra-long. She actually sat on the couch watching a show while I sat across the room at the table and secretly made these for her.

Aspen has been watching me do my makeup for over a year now, and she's acquired my unused brushes and sponges for her own play use. Until now she hasn't had anything to dip the brushes in so it was about time I remedied that!

  3. What an awesome idea! I wish you had posted it back when Zoie was 2. She would not be satisfied with anything other than the real stuff now that she is a grown up of 6. Ha ha! She has been sporting some bright blue eye shadow for the past few days. (only at home of course)

  4. This is such a good idea! I'm coming from Yours Truly :)

  5. I'm so excited to give this to Aspen!
