Aspen's final Kiwi Crate

We received our third and final Kiwi Crate in April. I'm really glad I tried out this service, especially in the colder months. I don't think it's something I'd do in the summer time, or when the weather is consistently nice, but I do think I'd order again during the winter. I'm tentatively planning to do another round near Christmas.

This crate focused on the environment since Earth Day is in April. The crate contained supplies for making paper and for decorating a reusable bag (included) with a homemade stamp. Aspen had fun stuffing tissue paper into a little container and then choosing which color to dye the concoction. She dilligently shook the container full of tissue and water until she hit herself in the head with it; then it was my turn to shake until everything dissolved. We didn't use enough tissue paper, though, and when everything was pressed and dried, there was only a tiny scrap of homemade paper. I haven't even shown it to her yet (it dried overnight and she forgot about it) because I'm afraid she'll be disappointed. So I'm waiting until we have time to make more so we can be excited about a bigger piece!

The stamp experience was a bit of a let-down, unfortunately. There was a dried flower and leaf included to be used as the stamps, but as soon as I took it out of the package and started to tell Aspen they're fragile, the dog barked at something and Aspen was so startled she ended up breaking a bunch of the flower petals off. A lot of crying ensued. She still had the leaf, though! And she stamped it all over the place. It's nice that a lot of the supplies are inteded to be reused for any future projects you might have. The ink pads are especially great because we love using her horse stamps and my ABC stamps during art time at our house. Now we have a few more color choices instead of just black and brown.

Earlier this week Aspen dug out the polar bear crate so she could wear her ears and mittens. She pretended she was a dog for about an hour and they made the perfect accessories for her. I'm so glad she's finding uses for the crate supplies well-after the fact!

It has been so wonderful to watch Aspen's skills and interests grow over the last few months. And not just in relation to doing art projects, but in general. She's learning so much so very quickly and I'm lucky to be a part of it.
