Why yes, I did survive Christmas.

I'm at the tail-end of another 3-day work week. How did I get so lucky? I am thrilled to have another 4-day weekend ahead of me. It's just a matter of getting through the last of the office hours as well as my pilates class. Then I'm officially getting back into PJs non-stop.

Christmas was quite a pleasant adventure in the Pink House this year. Seth and Sophia spent a lot of time in the PH with both the dogs tearing about causing chaos. There were more than enough gifts from our mom, my favorite being a recorded interview with my 90-year-old grandpa who lives in Connecticut. At Thanksgiving my mom asked him a series of questions and recorded his answers, thoughts and quirks for all of us to enjoy.

I particularly enjoyed hearing him describe a game he played as a youth called "Peggy." There was something about sharpening a stick and throwing it that caught my attention. Boys will be boys. And I could just picture my grandpa as a 5-year-old running to the fence at his daycare in order to watch the trains chug by the property. He has always been fascinated with trains. It's so wonderful to have an audio piece of my grandpa to accompany all the memories in my head and photographs in albums.

Did you know my grandpa didn't know his Italian name until he joined the Navy? He walked around his whole life before that thinking his name was Danny.

Other highlights of the Holiday include lots of good food, lots of good movies and an adventure on Trax. Public transportation is a whirlwind of excitement on the night of a Jazz game. That was poor planning on my part but we still had plenty of time for a delicious dinner and walk around Temple Square.

I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with my sister and older brother and I'm so glad that Kev can easily welcome them into our home on any occasion. We are truly blessed to be such good friends with my siblings. Of course, we're not talking about my younger brother who got to spend Christmas by the pool in Virginia with his wife and her family, thankyouverymuch. He rubbed it in by sending picture messages to us of him standing outside in nothing but a lightweight button up while the rest of us were freezes our tushies off.

I love it when I have time to be with family and friends and I'm grateful for all the goodies and gifts that were dropped off at the PH this year. I'm also glad that Kev had time to focus on the dining room that has been under construction since I took a sledgehammer to it in April 2008. I'm happy to report that we no longer have holes in the walls. Just the ones in the floor...

I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday and that you'll stick around to see photos of the festivities enjoyed at the PH and beyond.

Happy New Year!

  1. Oh how fun! I've been meaning to sit down with my grandma and record her oral history, and have yet to do it. I've GOT to get on that this year. Maybe I can make a kid-free weekend trip to accomplish it all. I would just love to have a recording of my grandpa as well. Perfect gift. So glad you enjoyed the holidays, hope you're not too buried in snow! Happy New Year! Can't wait to see pics of the festivities.

  2. The older I get, the more I realize how important it is to have that history — oral or written — from our grandparents (and parents, probably). I'm glad you go to hear that interview with your grandpa.

Hope you had a good new year!

Thanks for stopping by!
